Are Wool Blankets Okay for Babies?

Posted by Zane Ryder on

With so much information about baby goods online, knowing what product is right for your baby can feel overwhelming.

If you have children, you want to try and source reliable information to help you navigate your new life with your baby, only to find a competing argument that says the complete opposite.

When it comes to keeping your baby comfortable, safe and warm, there are hundreds of different opinions on the subject.

We get it too! That’s why Sweet Cheeks Merino has done all of the hard work for you by designing products that we are not only passionate about, but products are based on reliable information and designed to give you and your baby the best products we can offer.

Your baby’s comfort and safety is at the front of our mind for all of our products. Let’s show you how.

In this article, we’re going to talk about all things merino wool baby blankets and whether they are the right option for your baby.

Are wool products bad for my baby?

The short answer is not at all. Gone are the days of scratchy woollen products. Your childhood memories of the uncomfortable woollen jumper your grandparents gave you as a kid can now be tossed out the window, thanks to merino wool.

Merino wool is a game changer for woollen products as the wool fibres are silky smooth, creating a soft touch and feel that won’t leave your babies’ skin feeling itchy or irritated. The natural fibres of merino wool are also great for babies with skin conditions such as eczema and rashes, as they won’t add to any irritability.

Isn’t a woollen blanket too hot?

Babies find it difficult to regulate their body temperature up until around 18 months due to their body weight and the surface of their skin. Whether your baby is hot or cold merino woollen blankets are a perfect way to help your baby regulate its temperature when they are sleeping.

You needn’t worry about your baby being too hot or sweaty with a merino wool product because merino wool can help with regulating body temperate, meaning that if your baby is sweaty, the wool fibres can absorb moisture from perspiration. Even better, the sweat can then be transferred out of the fibres back into the surrounding environment.

If you want your baby to stay cool in summer and warm in winter, then a merino wool blanket is perfect for keeping them snug all year round.

Is wool safe for babies to sleep in?

Not only do we know that merino is safe on the skin and also helps with regulating body temperature in different climates, but it has also been proven that babies sleep better with wool.

Medical studies have shown that merino wool assists babies with getting settled quicker and crying less. It has also been said that because babies are easier to get settled that feeding and healthy weight gain also improved.

In a merino wool blanket, babies will be able to achieve a comfortable temperature to keep them settled for longer.

How are Sweet Cheeks merino wool products made?

Sweet Cheeks merino wool products are a unique process, and we’re proud of what we do.

The process we take from start to finish allows us to perform most of our production processes here in Australia or New Zealand. Our process starts by sourcing wool from merino sheep, and then the raw fleece is taken to China, where the wool is spun into yarn. We take our raw fleece to China because there are no spinning facilities in Australia.

Once we get our yarn spun, it’s sent back to our Melbourne facility and knitted into rolls of fabric and dyed using environmentally and ethically friendly GOTS certified dyes. This certification means that our dyes and methods are safe for your baby to use.

We then take the wool to Auckland to have the fabric cut to size, and then completed products are sent to our Auckland or Melbourne distribution centres, where they are checked, labelled and packed.

We pride ourselves on embracing slow fashion, so we design our products with longevity in mind. Our merino wool products can then be passed down from generation to generation while reducing impacts on the environment.

We also manufacture in small batches to reduce our footprint.

Our products are sent all around the world to babies, and when shipping, all our packaging is either 100% compostable or 100% recyclable. Merino fibre is circular, meaning that it’s 100% biodegradable, meaning that it can be returned to the soil and completely break down.
